Super Tuesday was an exciting time for political junkies, like me. In Montana, the Montana Republicans held a caucus with only 1630 people voting.
The good stuff: The Montana GOP caucus did get some national attention and some of the candidates’ campaign folks and family members did come to Montana, so that was good. Some campaigns put some Montana political folks to work, which was nice.
The Montana GOP kept their website updated throughout the evening so us junkies could check the results.
The bad stuff: There was not enough participation in the caucus. It seems with all the lists and databases political parties have these days, the GOP could have ensured most, if not all, of the precinct seats were filled by calling people and asking them to put their name in for one of the slots.
The continuous fight with Lt. Governor Bohlinger was a downer.
Other stuff: I believed with the team that Romney had on the ground in Montana, it was a given that he would probably win the whole thing. Romney had several big players from the GOP on his team. One commentator said it was the establishment GOP machine that put Romney over the top. Maybe so. I thought Ron Paul’s folks might mount a serious threat. Paul finished a distant second, but he beat McCain and Huckabee.
The Nation: Although Romney took Montana, his campaign is in serious trouble. He has to take a long hard look and see if he wants to stick any more of his millions into a sinking ship. The Republican leaders (whoever they are) may be making a call to Mitt and try to convince him it’s time to pack it in for the good of the party. They probably made the call to Huckabee several weeks ago to help Romney, but he did not listen.
The so-called and self-anointed “true conservatives” of the Republican Party have a dilemma. They are running out of primaries and their main-man-Mitt (MMM) is losing. What’s a rich Republican, I mean true conservative, to do? Calling McCain a RINO (Republican In Name Only) does not seem to be working. Maybe they will resort to calling for a “do-over” like we’ve all seen on most elementary school playgrounds?
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) feels that McCain is the GOP nominee. The DNC sent an e-mail out this morning saying, “Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney are done. John McCain will be the Republican nominee — he’s the only one with a reasonable path to the nomination.” Of course, they need my money to beat John McCain. Maybe they can get some donations from Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, or James Dobson?
I was all prepared to watch the results come in from California last night. Everyone was saying it would be a long night. Not long after the polls closed, the races were called for McCain and Clinton.
Obama was endorsed by Senators John Kerry and Ted Kennedy from Massachusetts. Clinton slapped John and Ted across the face by beating Obama in Massachusetts by about 10%. Funny.
After all the Super Tuesday hoopla, not much has been decided. Obama and Clinton are still neck and neck. Mike Huckabee has a pulse from his Southern victories. Mitt Romney’s campaign is on life-support, and John McCain keeps marching on.
