Three Strikes and You are Out

House and the Senate members are gone, so we can relax. They’ll come back to their states and their districts and tell us all the good things they are doing, which you can probably count on one hand, or less.

They will blame the “other” party and the Democrats will blame the White House for their failures to get anything accomplished, like passing the appropriations bills by October 1.

Montana’s junior Senator, Jon Tester, wasted no time following the recess talking points put out by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee in slamming the Republicans for not passing a farm bill. It is unknown if certain members of Congress will get more subsidies with this farm bill. As CBS News reports, “
Even the members of Congress who vote on farm subsidies and earn $165,200 government salaries can get payments. A dozen of them or their close family have gotten a total of $6.2 million dollars over 10 years.”

Wow! Only in America. We have to remember these are the same folks who vote for their own pay raises, too.

The fact is the Democrats need to learn to compromise. I know, I know, it’s been awhile since they have been in charge, so there’s a learning curve here. It’s not a good thing to try and ram legislation down the minority’s throat. John and Jane Voter know which party is in charge and this lack of production, as you can tell by the polls, does not sit well with the voters.

So it falls on the Democrats.

The House comes back to work on the afternoon of December 4. The Senate could not pass anything Friday, so they are gone until the afternoon of December 3. Things are not going too well for anyone in the Senate these days.

First, the Senate tried to pass a bill (invoke cloture) to partially fund the war. It was brought forth by the Republicans. It failed to get 60 votes and failed 53-45.

Second, the Senate tried to pass a bill (invoke cloture) to partially fund the war. It was brought forth by the Democrats. It failed to get 60 votes and also failed 53-45.

Third, the Senate tried pass the Senate’s version of the Farm Bill (invoke cloture) and it failed 55-42.

Three strikes and you’re out.

So they headed home for turkey day. You may add your jokes about politicians and turkey day in the comments section.
