Things are looking up

If you are a supporter of the military, there are some positive reports trickling out of Iraq. If you are not a supporter of the military, maybe you should not read this.

It appears the surge is working, so now is not the time to cut and run.

General James Simmons, Deputy Commanding General, Multinational Corps – Iraq, recently said that during the last four months, “the number of IED attacks and casualties has dropped significantly. Right now there is a decrease across all the areas of Iraq.”

That’s good news, but of course there is a lot more work to be done in Iraq. With the curtail of weapons coming in from Iran, look for even better news in the upcoming months. The officials in Iraq will need to work out their political problems for a long-term solution.

Meanwhile, there’s more good news! All the branches of the military met or exceeded their recruiting goals for October 2007.

It appears the good news is being ignored by the anti-war Democrats. Last night they passed a bill that would require President Bush to quickly start bringing troops home and end combat operations about a year from now. Plus they only funded about a quarter of his request for the war. With all that, the bill just barely passed in the House 218-203. If it passes the Senate, which is doubtful, it will be vetoed. If it is vetoed, then the word is that the Democrats will wait until spring to pass funding for the war, which will leave the Department of Defense (DoD) short on funds. The DoD would then need to shift money around from other programs and maybe lay off civilian workers.

Of course there have been showdowns before with the Democrats and the President about Iraq war funding.

The President is undefeated so far.

It seems the Democrats will run right up to the line of stopping all funding, but then back off. They don’t appear to have the guts to go all the way, possibly because it will be construed as not supporting the troops. Until the Democrats go all the way, their base supporters will not be happy. They may not be happy anytime soon.
