Weekend in Sports

There were a lot of upsets this weekend in both college and pro football. That’s what makes it interesting and gives some of us sports fans gray hair. Any day watching a football game is a good day! Next weekend is big for football in Montana. We have the championships in high school football, Carroll College hosts a playoff game, and the Griz and Cats play.

Montana

The Saints go marching: It was a tough game and one that was fun to watch between Carroll College and Montana Tech on Saturday in Helena. Carroll came from behind to beat Tech 17-14. Next up for the Saints: The Playoffs!

Carroll College will host Black Hills State next Saturday in Helena. Carroll beat them 17-0 earlier this year.

Montana Tech played the #2 team in the country (Carroll College) very tough this year. They should have been given a spot in the playoffs.

How about those Griz?: The University of Montana Grizzlies kept their unbeaten streak alive with a 27-14 win over Idaho State. Late in the third quarter, the Griz broke open a tie game to win going away. The game was held on the cement field called Holt Arena. I can accept fake grass, but football should not played in domes. The Grizzlies are 10-0 and 7-0 in the Big Sky Conference.

The Cats come back: In one of the longer games (time wise) this year, the Montana State University Bobcats beat the Portland State Vikings 50-36 in Portland on Saturday. The Bobcats are 6-4 and 4-3 in the Big Sky. The Cats were flagged 15 times during the game for 137 yards. The Vikings threw five interceptions.

Rumble on the tundra: Let’s get ready to rumble! The Griz visit the Bobcats on Saturday. You can throw the records out for this game. Both teams played well this weekend, so look for a good game on the frozen tundra of Bozeman. Well, maybe the tundra won’t be frozen as the forecast calls for temperatures in the 40s. Mud Bowl?

Big College Football

Oh Baby! This was a good weekend. Ohio State lost to Illinois on Saturday 28-21. That leaves Kansas and Hawaii as the only undefeated teams. Nebraska turned around from their 76-39 loss last week to beat Kansas State 73-31.

1. Ohio State lost to Illinois
2. LSU beat Louisiana Tech
3. Oregon did not play
4. Kansas beat Oklahoma State
5. Oklahoma beat Baylor
6. Missouri beat Texas A&M
7. West Virginia beat Louisville
8. Boston College lost to Maryland
9. Arizona State beat UCLA
10. Georgia beat Auburn

New BCS Standings:

1. LSU 9-1
2. Oregon 8-1
3. Kansas 10-0
4. Oklahoma 9-1
5. Missouri 9-1
6. West Virginia 8-1
7. Ohio State 10-1
8. Arizona State 9-1
9. Georgia 8-2
10. Virginia Tech 8-2

#3 Kansas plays #5 Missouri on November 24. That game will probably be for the Big 12 North championship. The winner will (probably) take on Oklahoma (Big 12 South Champion) for the Big 12 Championship and possibly a spot in the National Championship game. No matter what, the Big 12 is the best conference in major college football this year.

Sunday Tackle Football

Next week, I’m using a dartboard: Good grief. I totally sucked this week with my picks. Going into Monday night’s game, I am 5-8.

This weekend started the second half of the season. Who would have thought the Rams would win their first game? How about the AFC West? Weak! San Diego held on to beat the Colts Sunday night and moved to 5-4. Manning threw six interceptions. The Colts gave the game to San Diego.

Denver and KC are 4-5. Eight wins may win the AFC West.

The Denver Broncos, after taking a beating from Detroit, came into Arrowhead Stadium and whipped my Chiefs 27-11. This was the Broncos first win in KC since 2002. There was a nine-second span in the game where Denver scored two touchdowns off of Chiefs’ turnovers. A salute to Priest Holmes for rushing for 65 yards for his first start. If he would have had some blockers, he’d gotten 100.

The Chiefs get to play at the Colts next week. The Broncos host the Titans. The Chargers play at the Jaguars.

How about Brett Favre? 351 Yards and three TD.

The Detroit Lions were brought back to earth, losing to the Arizona Cardinals 31-21.

Here are my top five NFL teams:

1. New England
2. Dallas
3. Indianapolis
4. Green Bay
5. Pittsburgh

Go Fast, Turn Left

It’s almost over: NASCAR was in Phoenix this week, but it was the same result with Jimmy Johnson winning his fourth straight race.

There’s one race left this very long season that started in February and ends November 18. There are only two people still in competition to win the championship, Jimmy Johnson and Jeff Gordon.

Johnson leads Gordon by 86 points. Johnson needs to finish just 18th or better next week to win the championship. Of course, it’s not a done deal. He could wreck during the race. Johnson’s team is the best right now, so don’t look for any mistakes from them. They just have to stay out of wrecks during the race and stay close to Gordon.

  1. Thanks for the information on topics.I was excited by this article. Thank you again.< HREF="http://college-online.freetzi.com" REL="nofollow" TITLE="college online">College online<> for good ideas.

  2. It sure looked like Bagley broke his arm – at least that’s the way it looked on TV. I have not seen any reports confirming it. That “turf” should be outlawed – or maybe they should paint their parking lot green and play on it.The calls. There were a lot of bad calls this weekend. Maybe the refs were from Pocatello!

  3. It was a good game, but it was tough to see Ryan Bagley go down so hard.He will be missed, but the rest of the receiving corps did step up, so I’m not too worried about that. There were some calls, though, that made me wonder if the officiating crew was from Pocatello.
