Weekend in Sports

Yep, it was another great weekend for sports. Besides college and pro football, baseball, and racing, the high school football playoffs are starting. Is this a great country or what? And, we get to do it all over next weekend!!!

Montana College Football

In a very tough defensive game, the Carroll College Saints remained unbeaten with a 10-3 victory over the MSU Northern Lights. Carroll College is the Frontier Conference champions once again. The Saints are 9-0 and are ranked #2 in the country. This was one of the better games to watch on Saturday.

The Montana State University Bobcats lost to the Northern Colorado Bears 16-13. OUCH. This was the Bears’ first win in 16 games. MSU fell to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the Big Sky. The Bobcats will try to regroup when they host Northern Arizona next Saturday.

The University of Montana Grizzlies improved their record to 8-0 and 5-0 in the Big Sky with a 21-16 win over Northern Arizona. Northern Arizona is in second place in the Big Sky. This was one of the better games played by the Griz. They host Portland State next Saturday.

Sunday Tackle Football for Money

Arizona, Atlanta, Baltimore, Dallas, Kansas City, Seattle all had open dates this weekend.

Jack the Blogger went a terrible 8-4 with my picks (going into Monday night’s game). I am still striving for that perfect weekend!

After week eight, we have two undefeated teams. The Colts started out slowly, but it came together in the second quarter as they beat up on the Panthers 31-7.

The Patriots annihilated the Redskins 52-7. Tom Brady ran for two TDs and passed for three others. Wow.

Next week the Patriots 8-0 visit the Colts 7-0. You don’t very often see two undefeated teams meet this late in the season. Get your popcorn ready folks. The game starts at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Watch out for the New Orleans Saints and the San Diego Chargers. They are both back to winning form.

A salute goes to the 5-2 Detroit Lions. I keep picking against them, and they keep winning.

Baseball

On Saturday night, the World Series moved to Denver. It did not matter much as the Boston Red Sox beat the Rockies 10-5. Jacoby Ellsbury, who I mentioned in the previous blog as someone to watch, had four hits, two RBIs and two runs scored.

On Sunday night, in a must-win game, the Rockies lost 4-3. This whole World Series was not very competitive, although game four was pretty well-played by both teams.

My hat is off to the Boston Red Sox for winning. I thought the Rockies would play better. The Red Sox are just that good, and it looks like they may be very good for the next few years.

There will be no traffic jams in Denver Monday night. If there would have been a game five, it would have competed with the Packers/Broncos Monday Night Football game.

Speaking of the World Series, it does not seem they are as competitive as they use to be. The historical facts kind of back it up. It’s been five years since a World Series went to a seventh deciding game. There have only been four series go seven games since 1990. In the 1960s, there were six years with a seven game series. In the 1970s, there were five seven game series. In the 1980s, there were four.

Funny thing, nobody much remembers who won the World Series unless you are from the city, or a major fan of the team who won or lost it.

Racing

NASCAR made a stop in Atlanta this weekend. It was an exciting finish as there was a green white checker, but Dale Earnhardt lost a tire and the field was frozen. This allowed Jimmy Johnson to take the victory. Jeff Gordon finished seventh.

The Race for the Nextel Cup is basically down to three drivers :

1. Jeff Gordon
2. Jimmy Johnson (-9)
3. Clint Bower (-111)

It would be great if during the last three, four, or five races of the year if NASCAR would let the top twelve drivers in the chase start at the front of these races in order of points. It might make it a little more competitive and more exciting.
