The University of Montana is in the cross hairs of Mr. George Will. Today in the Washington Post, Mr. Will gives his opinion about the “The $114.69 Speech Police.”
His opinion is in regards to the University’s attempt to regulate political speech. So far the University of Montana has succeeded, but “the times they may be a changing” if the U.S. Supreme Court hears the appeal.
This all started in 2004 when a student named Aaron Flint went over the University’s limit of $100 on his campaign for the student government. He spent $214.69. This was after some other groups who were not subjected to the same rules, spent money against him.
So, he bought pizzas – pepperoni pizzas. He won. Then he was removed from office for going over the spending limit set by the University of Montana. Now his case has been appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. I hope they take it. It’s about free speech.
Next time Mr. Flint may want to purchase a meat lovers pizza or maybe a couple with sausage to spice up his campaign a little. Of course, these pizzas may cost a little more…
