Weekend in Sports

It was a great weekend to watch some sports. College football, NASCAR, NFL Football, and the Major League Playoffs were on my agenda!

Montana College Football

A shout goes out to the best college football team in Montana, the Carroll College Saints. They are 7-0, after beating Rocky Mountain College 42-0. They have not given up a touchdown this season. Impressive. The Saints need more love from Montana.

Eastern Washington took their frustration out on losing to the Montana Grizzlies last weekend by a point, beating the Montana State Bobcats 35-13. The Cats are 4-2. They are 2-1 in the Big Sky Conference.

The Montana Grizzlies went on the road for the first time this year and pulled out a 17-3 boring win over Sacramento State. The Griz are 6-0. They are 3-0 in the Big Sky. A win is a win.

Big Time College Football

Another number one bites the dust – #1 LSU lost to the #17 Kentucky Wildcats in three overtimes 43-37.

And, it was not a good Saturday to be #2. Unranked Oregon State beat #2 California 31-28.

The #3 ranked team, Ohio State, won easily. They should move up to #1. Boston College was ranked #4 and should move up. South Florida was ranked #5 last week and won on Saturday.

Missouri was ranked #11 last week. They found out they were not quite ready for the top ten as they lost to #6 Oklahoma 41-31.

The first Bowl Championship Series (BCS) poll is out and here are the top five:

1. Ohio State (7-0)
2. South Florida (6-0)
3. Boston College (6-0)
4. LSU (6-1)
5. Oklahoma (6-1)

Kansas, Hawaii and Arizona State are also undefeated so far this season, but they are far down the BCS poll. If there are more than two teams undefeated this season, we’ll end up having another BCS train wreck for the National Championship.

Racin’

I guess the immunizations worked for the democratic staffers at Lowe’s Motor Speedway Saturday night. I did not hear about any of them catching a disease at the NASCAR race.

Jeff Gordon in the #24 car won the race. He’s won the last two races and holds a 68 point lead over Jimmy Johnson. There are five races left this season.

Baseball

The Cleveland Indians and the Boston Red Sox are tied at one game each going into Monday night’s game. Yawn.

Rocky Mountain High! The Colorado Rockies lead the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-0. The Rockies beat the D-Backs 4-1 in a rain-soaked game in Denver Sunday night.

Sunday Tackle Football

I’m 8-4 going into Monday night’s game, so it was not a great week for me in picking the winners.

A big salute goes to Kansas City Chiefs tight end, Tony Gonzalez, who now owns the NFL record for most TD catches by a tight end when he caught his 63rd TD pass in the first half. He added another TD in the second half. His first TD catch of the day surpassed Shannon Sharpe for the NFL record. The Chiefs beat the Bengals 27-20 to bring their record to 3-3. Gonzalez is the best tight end in football.

The “battle” of the unbeaten teams saw New England spank Dallas 48-27. Tom Brady is just a great quarterback. In the battle of number 81s, it was just about a tie as Randy Moss had six catches for 59 yards and a TD. Terrell Owens had six catches for 66 yards and one TD.

It will be an interesting contest if New England and Indianapolis go into their November 4 match-up undefeated.

Other interesting games:

Minnesota beat Chicago 34-31 with a field goal as time expired.

Tampa Bay beat Tennessee 13-10 on a field goal with 11 seconds left.

How about those New Orleans Saints??? They won their first game. They went to Seattle and laid a licking on the Seahawks 28-17. Some of the play calling by Seattle coach Mike Holmgren was horrendous. Luckily the Seahawks are in a weak division.

Congrats goes to 43-year-old Vinny Testaverde of the Carolina Panthers. He became the oldest starting quarterback to win a game in the NFL. Old guys rock!

And finally

Did you happen to catch the Boise State/Nevada football game Sunday night? 136 points were scored in the four overtime game. Boise State won 69-67. The defense came through on the last play for Boise State to stop a two-point conversion. The defense…
