GOD

UPDATE: Thanks to the bloggers and the media, the Acting Architect of the Capitol Stephen T. Ayers announced that he is issuing a new memo to affected Congressional offices changing the policy regarding messages included on the certificates that accompany flags that are flown over the U.S. Capitol.

Common sense has prevailed…for now.

There they go again…

Senators and Representatives are asked to fly flags over the Capitol for their constituents all the time. I had one flown for my parent’s 50th Anniversary a few years ago. The flags are basically run up a flag pole and brought right back down. The constituents are given a certificate that says it was flown over the Capitol in honor of, or for XXXX. The constituents pay for the flag being flown over the Capitol.

Recently, the “acting” Architect of the Capitol refused to allow the word “God” on a flag certificate. A person (an Eagle Scout) asked the certificate be inscribed with, “In honor of my grandfather Marcel Larochelle, and his dedication and love of God, country, and family.”

The acting Architect of the Capitol left “God” out because it was a religious expression. The certificate was returned to the constituent with the words “…for his dedication and love of Country and family.”

Representative Robert A. Brady, D-PA, Chairman of the House Committee on Administration issued a statement regarding the guidelines for flag certificates. He was quick to point out that, “As a point of information, the current policy, which disallows political and religious statements, has been in place for several years, significantly predating acting Architect Stephen Ayers and the current Democratic majority.”

Then why has this never happened before…when the Republicans were in the majority?

  1. I’m a militant atheist – and conservative/libertarian – but even I would be OK with someone having the word “god” inscribed on such a plaque. It is NOT a declaration of the government’s support of religion (any religion) — the inscription was intended for one person only.

  2. <>Then why has this never happened before…when the Republicans were in the majority?<>‘Cause the Democrats are better at following the law. This has been another episode of simple answers to easy questions.
