On Friday afternoon and evening there were several reports from anonymous sources in the Idaho GOP saying that on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Time, Senator Larry Craig would resign. Of course, we all know how I like anonymous sources so I waited until Saturday to see if it was actually going to happen. It did. He resigns effective September 30.
We all saw this coming when the Republican “rats” started jumping off Larry’s ship.
Something really confuses me with the Republican Party. It seems to me that it’s OK with the Republicans in the Senate and the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) for one of their U.S. Senators to frequent whores in Louisiana (Vitter) than it is for a U.S. Senator to tap his foot in a restroom stall and plead guilty to disorderly conduct in Minneapolis (Craig).
Something must be wrong in that party?
So now Larry Craig is history. If I were him, I’d be ticked off at the lack of support from my Republican colleagues, the National Republican Senatorial Committee and the Republican National Committee. Craig is probably not like that. Maybe Craig should run for the U.S. Senate as an Independent in 2008? He may not win, but he’d surely get enough votes to do damage to the Republican who was running.
Here in Montana, Ms. Jennifer McKee of Lee Newspapers decided that “Craig’s pain could be Tester’s gain” in a worthless story printed on Friday. We all know that Jen loves Jon. The story centers on Tester moving from #99 to #98 if Craig resigned. She even had comments from a Senate Historian. Good grief. Correctly, Tester’s office had no comment.
