Pit Bulls and Politics

Our society is very funny. We slow down to see a car wreck or we follow a fire truck to see where it’s headed. For hours we’ll watch a disaster on TV to see how it impacts people.

Today we were able to see two major issues on TV. First, Alberto Gonzales resigned as the Attorney General for the United States. That was big, but the thing that put Alberto Gonzales’ resignation in second place today was the guilty plea by Michael Vick.

If it had been done right, Gonzales would have scheduled his resignation speech at the same time as Vick’s press conference.

There are some people who are cheering both and this is like having your cake and eating it too for them. They like to see those in power get in trouble to bring them down a notch or two – closer to their level.

So far, Vick is the only one of the two who has broken the law. He did some hideous things with dog fighting. He should be punished. He seemed remorseful in his press conference. He took full responsibility for his actions. He apologized to everyone including the kids. He asked for forgiveness.

He said through this ordeal he had found Jesus.

I heard some folks or guests on ESPN radio and Fox News make fun of him for invoking the religion issue. It would not be right for me to laugh at Vick or anyone for saying they had found Jesus due to the problems being publicized. Religion is a personal issue between a person and their God. I am not one to judge. I am glad he found Jesus. I have no reason not to believe him.

Tonight on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, the game is between the Falcons and Bengals. The Falcons are Vick’s team (or former team) for those of you who do not follow football. Although there’s not much more to say about this, get ready for Michael Vick and more Michael Vick and more Michael Vick from the three talking heads on the telecast. (I yearn for the days when there were real announcers doing football telecasts)

Gonzales’ biggest mistake is that he was not quite ready for primetime. Maybe the democrats will dig some more and there will be charges brought against him, but for now a big rock has been removed from his back. Maybe now he can go back to a normal life if the democrats let him. But, there’s BREAKING NEWS on that front: A few minutes ago I received an e-mail from the Democratic National Committee saying “But even though Karl Rove and Alberto Gonzales are gone, the investigation must continue.” Of course, they ended their e-mail with, “Make a contribution to the Democratic Party, and help us send a message — that we’re not going to stop until our questions have been answered:”

Sometimes politics are a lot like pit bull fights.
