All the NFL teams have played at least one preseason game now. The first preseason games are pretty boring as most of the starters play a series or two or maybe a quarter.
The key dates to look at in the preseason are August 28 when the rosters must be cut down to maximum of 75 players and September 1 when the rosters must be cut down to maximum of 53 players for the regular season.
The Kansas City Chiefs offense was dead in game one. It was like watching a funeral. I won’t get too concerned about the offense until week three of preseason. The offense comes together more slowly than the defense. I thought the Chiefs defense did well as they scored a touchdown and a safety.
Starting with week two, we’ll see more starters play to get their timing down. Week two starts Thursday night with Miami visiting my Kansas City Chiefs. It looks like ESPN will televise the game which will start at 6:00 pm here in the mountains.
An interesting note to this game is that long-time Chiefs QB Trent Green now plays for Miami. It was kind of a nasty divorce between Green and the Chiefs. Green did not play too well in Miami’s first preseason game and, on the other hand, the two QBs for the Chiefs did not play well in their first preseason game. Green is a real good man whom I respect. Unfortunately, last season he suffered a real bad concussion and I don’t think he was the same afterwards. I do wish him well.
It looks like the Chiefs and Larry Johnson are close to a deal. Supposedly they are within about $4 million. If Johnson is signed, it may be the end of the road for Priest Holmes. Holmes has been practicing, but has not taken any hits in practice and may not until week four of the preseason. The Chiefs will probably keep three RBs and they look to be Johnson, Michael Bennett and rookie Kolby Smith, although I would never count out Holmes as he may challenge Smith if Smith does not play better. The Chiefs could keep four RBs, too.
The Chiefs will break training camp in River Falls, Wisconsin on Wednesday (Aug 15). There has been a lot of talk about the Chiefs’ camp this year. HBO is filming a series called “Hard Knocks” about the Chiefs 2007 training camp.
Also, ESPN writer (and former Kansas City Star sportswriter) Elizabeth Merrill has written a great STORY about the old style way the Chiefs holds training camp. It’s a great read.
It’s way too early to tell how the Chiefs will stack up this season. In the AFC West, the Chargers and the Broncos look tough and with the Chiefs having a tough schedule and lots of new players, it may be tough to compete for a playoff spot.
But, my glass is always half-full. It’s way too early to predict.
