Rehberg opts out

The Associated Press is reporting that Congressman Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., will not run for United States Senate against Max Baucus, D-Mont., or for Governor against Brian Schweitzer, D-Mont.

Baucus is probably relieved because it appears he is safe from a tough race. I never figured Rehberg would run against Schweitzer.

This is not a surprise to most people. With the negative feelings toward many Republicans these days, coupled with what happened in the 2006 elections, it’s important for Republicans to run in contests where they have the best chance and hold on to their seats.

It kind of reminds me of the song by Bon Jovi called, “Livin’ on a Prayer” which has the line, “We’ve got to hold on to what we’ve got…”

I would think Rehberg would be eyeing Tester’s Senate seat in 2012. Maybe his Chief of Staff might be looking at his bosses House seat in 2012. I hope I live that long.

But, 2008 comes first. So, the next question is who will the Republicans put up against Max and Brian? There must be someone out there besides Lange?
