“…we are forever indebted to those who have given their lives that we might be free. I don’t have to tell you how fragile this precious gift of freedom is.”
-President Ronald Reagan, 1983 Memorial Day speech
His words ring true even today.
As a former member of the military, who entered the military when Reagan was elected and got out shortly after Clinton was, I will always remember my friends who died during their service to our great country. That sacrifice and those of their families have not gone unnoticed. My flag will be proudly displayed in honor of them.
Will your flag be flying?
In 2007 we’ve seen our military become a pawn in the political circle. We’ve seen our Presidential contenders use military personnel for their political gains. We’ve seen a Congress use the military like a beach ball at an outdoor concert. The Western Word has found it a slap in the face that any elected official, who never wore our country’s uniform, tries to use our military personnel for their political gain.
Today we are frequently reminded of the sacrifices that our military personnel have made in the Global War on Terrorism. Yes, John Edwards, I used the words “Global War on Terrorism.” Also, Mr. Edwards, you should be ashamed for using this sacred day to promote your anti-war message. Mr. Edwards: You have no right whatsoever to taint this sacred day. You have never served. This day, called Memorial Day, is a time to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives for our country, our freedom, our liberty.
Memorial Day is a time to pack away petty politics for one day.
I salute the men and women who served and are serving. I bow my head and say a prayer for all those who did not return. God bless you and your families.
President Reagan in 1981 wrote, “We are resolved to stand firm against those who would destroy the freedoms we cherish. We are determined to achieve an enduring peace — a peace with liberty and with honor. This determination, this resolve, is the highest tribute we can pay to the many who have fallen in the service of our Nation.”
These are the words that everyone, including our elected officials, need to live by in 2007 and beyond. God Bless America.
