Former President Jimmy Carter recently slammed current President George W. Bush in an interview, and then Carter softened his rhetoric after it was in the news. It’s not good when a former President slams a current President. I think Carter understands that now. Maybe he should have had his former speechwriter, Chris Matthews (MSNBC), write his talking points?
I remember the Jimmy Carter years well. We had 12% inflation. 21% interest rates. I remember the Misery Index being very high. The Misery Index is when you add the unemployment rate with the inflation rate. During Carter’s years the average was 16.2. Now it is 7.9.
We also had the Iran hostage crisis. Carter could not bring them home and soon to be President Ronald Reagan basically told Iran to release the hostages or suffer the consequences. They came home the day of Reagan’s inauguration.
Jimmy’s brother, Billy Carter, was one of the few highlight of his brother’s term. He brought us “Billy Beer” and you can’t really find fault with a man who promotes beer, can you?
But, the worst thing we had during the Carter years was DISCO and for that he will never be forgiven. I leave you with these lyrics from the Bee Gees….
Well, you can tell by the way I use my walk, I’m a woman’s man, no time to talk.
Music loud and women warm. I’ve been kicked around since I was born.
And now it’s all right, it’s O.K. And you may look the other way.
We can try to understand The New York Times’ effect on man.
Whether you’re a brother Or whether you’re a mother, You’re stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive.
-Stayin Alive by the Bee Gees (1977)
