Bonds, Barry Bonds

As someone who does not watch a lot of baseball, the quest by Barry Bonds to break Major League Baseball’s (MLB) homerun record has caught my attention.

As of today, Bonds has 744 homeruns. The record is 755 by Hank Aaron.

There are those they believe Bonds has cheated. I say show me some proof. Show me that he broke the rules of MLB. Show me a failed drug test. MLB has been doing random drug testing since 2003.

As far as I know, Barry Bonds has never tested positive for any performance enhancing drugs. There are many people who allege that Bonds used steroids and other performance substances, but there’s never been any proof of it that I have read. The allegations still persist and they will forever. People have and will write books about it. People have and will write articles about it. Until there’s a failed drug test by Bonds, it’s all just speculation.

Maybe because it’s such an extraordinary act, it raises doubts of the record being broken within the rules. Some people just want to believe Barry Bonds cheated. They really just don’t like him.

Bonds has been the Most Valuable Player (MVP) seven times. He’s a 13 time All-Star. He’s won eight gold gloves. He is a great player, period.

Isn’t this what MLB wants; someone like me who does not really care about MLB noticing and watching games as Bonds pursues Aaron’s record?

As long as Barry Bonds is playing within the rules and has never failed a drug test, he should be given all the glory when he breaks the most coveted record in baseball. I hope he does it at home. The MLB Commissioner should be there to take part in this historic event. The Commish owes it to the game…and to Barry Bonds.
