Please, may we have a NEW mission for OUR base?

The Great Falls Tribune ran a short STORY about U.S. Senator Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Congressman Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., meeting with Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne about obtaining a new mission for Malmstrom AFB before the 50 missiles are removed.

I believe they previously wrote to the Secretary about this. Maybe he did not answer, so they decided to visit him in person?

On January 30, 2007, Rehberg introduced a bill (H. RES. 115) in the House to keep the missile level at 500. The Western Word (TWW) could not find any bills introduced by Baucus or U.S. Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., regarding this issue.

Interestingly, the Wyoming Congressional delegation is also hunting for a new mission for their base, F.E. Warren. A STORY was posted on the Casper Star-Tribune website today.
F.E. Warren has 200 missile sites like Malmstrom, except they decommissioned 50 Peackeeper missiles in 2005. They currently have 150 Minuteman III missiles.

Malmstrom AFB is due to lose 50 Minuteman III missiles starting in May, bringing them down to 150.

So, who will get it done? Can the Department of Defense afford to place new missions at two western Air Force Bases? I highly doubt it.

The Western Word blogged about the clout the three missile states (Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota) have in this POST.

No matter what happens (meetings, letters, phones calls) you can count on the Montana Congressional delegation firing off a press release to try and take credit for it.
