Immigration reform…again

Yesterday President Bush presented his ideas for comprehensive immigration reform. This is basically the same plan presented in 2006, but this time with the democrats in control of Congress, it may pass.
The Western Word (TWW) agrees with most of the President’s ideas. Here are the TWW’s ideas for immigration reform:

First, we must seal the borders to prevent illegal immigrants from gaining access to our country.
Second, we must find a way to deal with those illegals that are here. Some reports put the number of illegals in our country at 11 million.
Third, we must develop a system where companies that employ these workers can easily identify who is legal through some sort of identification card (tamper resistant) and be held highly accountable if they hire illegals. If you don’t have the ID card, then you don’t get hired. A database for employers to check the status of these people could easily be developed. Maybe if the penalties were higher for those who employ them that might help.
Fourth, there must be no amnesty for those in this country illegally. None. The easy answer is to make them all leave, but that might never work. So, there must be a “carrot” to encourage those folks to leave and come back. For sure, they should not be given any special consideration over those who came here legally. They should go to the back of the line and that line should start back in the country they came from. So, in short you must leave to come back here to be in compliance with the law. If you don’t leave and get caught, then the penalty must be severe.

TWW believes that when the borders are sealed and an identification card is issued it would be easier to find those who are residing here illegally. But, it will not be easy.
The problem with illegal people in the USA is that they affect our schools, our law enforcement, our hospitals, etc. TWW believes that all the money that is spent on illegals in this country should be deducted from the aid given to the countries where these people came from. It might be a deterrent.
I’m sure there will be plenty of debate about this in the upcoming months. I think there can be an agreement reached. There is a very small window to get this done as next year is another election year and we all know nothing much gets done during an election year…especially when it’s a presidential election year.
