Up first today is the mess about U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
It will probably hit the fan in full force this week. The U.S. Senate is already debating a bill called, “Preserving United States Attorney Independence Act of 2007.”
I don’t know if Gonzalez will last or not.
Here are a couple of observations from The Western Word (TWW) about the AG issue. First, all the U.S. Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President. It’s a political appointment. If they did not lean to the right (in this case), they would not have even been considered for the position in the first place. They can be replaced at any time for any reason, period.
I think the problem here was the AG did not completely understand why they were replaced and fumbled the questions.
Second, the Republicans who are left in office are probably wishing they would have tried a little harder doing the November 2006 elections. Now with the Democrats in charge of the House and Senate, you have hearing after hearing about corruption and other messes by the administration. But, this is normal politics in Washington. Remember when Clinton was President and the Republicans were in charge of the House and Senate?
The second story on TWW today is a big congratulation.
Congratulations are in order for U.S. Senator Jon Tester, D-Mont., who posted five days of his schedule today (March 19).
TWW was deeply concerned about this. It was a campaign promise. We thought that March 14 might have been Groundhog Day (life has a funny way of repeating itself) for the junior Senator as it was the last day posted for a few days. Additional kudos to him as he even posted today’s schedule, which is nice to see on the actual day.
And the third story today deals with the fourth anniversary of the war in Iraq. TWW remembers those who have given their lives to protect us. God bless them and those they left behind. Thank you for keeping us safe.
As I mentioned in a previous blog, the war funding bill is being considered in Congress. There will be those members who don’t have a seat on an appropriations committee that will tack on pet projects for their states. I enjoyed hearing President Bush say this during his speech today: “Members of Congress are now considering an emergency war spending bill. They have a responsibility to ensure that this bill provides the funds and the flexibility that our troops need to accomplish their mission. They have a responsibility to pass a clean bill that does not use funding for our troops as leverage to get special interest spending for their districts. And they have a responsibility to get this bill to my desk without strings and without delay.”
TWW will be watching.
And finally, a big THANK YOU goes out to the Gathering of Eagles for their work in Washington DC this weekend and to Michelle Malkin for covering it on her website. Thanks for sticking up for the Red, White and Blue and for all of us veterans. We were with you in spirit! TWW salutes you!
