Late last summer, around 08/29/06, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle excitedly reported that “MSU research spending tops $100 million.”
The reporter asked MSU President Geoff Gamble if Montana State University’s research funding might be in jeopardy if Senator Conrad Burns failed to win re-election.
Gamble said no.
On February 17, 2007, the Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported, “Congress giveth and Congress taketh away?”
Of course, the Democrats say it’s the Republican fault. It’s not. The bottom line is that the Democrats in the last congress did not want the Republicans to get any publicity out of providing funding before the election, so they blocked the votes on most of the appropriations bills.
Even so, after taking control of Congress, the democrats could have passed these funding bills, including the $15 million for MSU, but they did not. So much for clout.
So now, President Gamble is eating his words. He’s probably also missing the clout of having Conrad Burns on the Senate Appropriations committee.
