The Great Falls Tribune is reporting today, “Malmstrom missiles targeted.”
I remember that the missiles were already targeted for elimination last year, but the Montana congressional delegation at that time, led by Conrad Burns who held key Defense committee positions, delayed the process by asking for a report into the justification for removing the 50 missiles and taking the total ICBM force from 500 down to 450.
So, it is up to Senator Max Baucus, Senator Jon Tester and Congressman Denny Rehberg to save them. But as I blogged about earlier, they are not on any defense or military committees to leverage their wants and needs for Malmstrom.
If they do not, it may be a slippery slope and we end up losing them all and Malmstrom being closed. According to the Tribune, the report is heading up the chain of command making its way to Congress.
Also according the Tribune it all depends, “if and when Congress authorizes the military to trim the nation’s force of land-based nuclear missiles from 500 to 450.”
I was fortunate enough to work at two missiles bases in my military career and enjoyed the job immensely. I think in today’s world, we need the 500 missiles more than ever, as I am Pro-Defense all the way and believe in Peace Through Strength.
