Caught My Eye…

It’s Friday and time for the first “Caught My Eye” of May! Thanks for stopping by!

You might be wondering, “What is ‘Caught My Eye?’” Well, it’s the weekly column where I take a quick look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week. Often I throw in some sarcasm and poke fun at people just to make you smile.

Today I write about Brian “Almighty” Schweitzer, a new Executive Director, April Jobs report, Hotmail is dead, #Hashtags, Reese “I’m an American Citizen” Witherspoon, Birthdays, jail sucks, and much more!

Tribune: Right-Wing Montana Blogs Scarce

The Great Falls Tribune’s editorial board writes a column called “The Edge” that is published every Saturday on their Viewpoints page. It is where the editorial board members kind of let their hair down some. The Viewpoints section is one of my favorite parts of the newspaper. I always read “The Edge” first on Saturday mornings.

In this past Saturday’s column (I cannot find it online) they looked at the disappearance of right-wing blogs in Montana and made some interesting observations. They asked, “why more moderate or left-leaning blogs are sticking around in Montana” instead of the right-leaning blogs.

I have been an active blogger since January 2005. As a recovering right-wing blogger who is now more independent, I have always held moderate beliefs (I see both sides). The Western Word is more of a blog where I comment on the news and issues. Up at the top of the page I state that The Western Word provides “Independent Commentary about Politics, Sports, the Media, and Current Events.”

I thought maybe I could shed some light on the issue of the scarce right-wing blogs.  Continue reading

Campaign 2012: Flyers in My Mailbox 3

In the past two weeks I’ve written about how much campaign literature I’ve received in the mail and that it is probably helping the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).

I posted a slideshow of some of the literature and since these columns were widely read, I’ve got round three ready to go! The campaign literature just keeps rolling in!

For your viewing pleasure, I’ve scanned a few of the flyers that got my attention. Note: Just because I use a flyer does not mean that I agree with the information.

I wrote about one local state legislative candidate (running for reelection) and his support groups. Last week I wrote that he and his support groups had graced my mailbox and/or doorknob with 11 flyers so far. Update: It is now up to 16 flyers! Whoop, whoop!

Enjoy the show!

Campaign 2012: Flyers in My Mailbox 2

Last Wednesday I wrote about the number campaign flyers I had received and that it was probably actually helping the U.S. Postal Service (USPS). I posted a slideshow of some of the literature and since that column was widely read, I thought I would provide an update.

In the past few days I’ve received about 22 pieces of campaign literature in the mail.

Also last Wednesday I wrote about one local state legislative candidate (running for reelection) and his support groups. Last week I wrote that they had graced my mailbox and/or doorknob with eight flyers so far. Update: It is now up to 11 flyers – mostly with the same photos!

I scanned a few of the flyers that got my attention for your viewing pleasure.  Note:  Just because I used a flyer does not mean I agree with the information.

Enjoy the show!

Campaign 2012: Flyers in My Mailbox

In this campaign season we can at least thank the candidates, political parties, and special interest groups for using the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to send thousands of political flyers across the state and nation to try to sway voters. This is good – the USPS needs the work!

One local state legislative candidate and his support groups have graced my mailbox and/or doorknob with eight flyers so far!

I have to admit that some of the flyers from the candidates and political groups are pretty good, so I have scanned a few of them to share as a slideshow (below). This election season we are seeing more tri-fold flyers and the goal is to get you to open it and read the propaganda. I did not scan the inside of the flyers.

Enjoy the show….
