Now that was domination…

It did not take long on Monday night for viewers to see which team was better in the BCS National Championship. It took the Alabama Crimson Tide a little less than three minutes to march 82 yards and score the game’s first touchdown to go up 7-0 on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. After the Irish went three and out, the Tide went on a 10 play 61 yard drive to go up 14-0.

Then the Irish then went three and out again. Alabama scored again and that pretty much took the fight out of the fighting Irish.

They were up 35-0 before the Irish scored. Alabama won the game 42-14. That was their second straight national title and third in four years.

The most exciting thing during the game happened when, with it getting out of hand, viewers were treated to camera shots of Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron’s girlfriend, Katherine Webb (who is also Miss Alabama). Twitter went wild when ESPN commentator Brent Musburger (age 73), said, “You see that lovely lady there, she does go to Auburn, but she’s also Miss Alabama and that’s AJ McCarron’s girlfriend.” He then added, “You quarterbacks, you get all the good looking women. What a beautiful woman. Wow.”

Just Football…

It was a good week for picking games!  I managed to pick 13 games correctly last week (out of 16), but finished out of the pizza.

We’re still holding out hope that ESPN will change its tune and allow a local network to televise the Montana and Montana State FCS playoff games on local television stations – more on this below.

This week I take a look at honors in the NFL, some unimpressive performances, the playoffs, Tebow, bathrooms, the BCS, the FCS, ESPN3, the Facebook page, the NAIA and results from the Championship games in Missouri!

ESPN3

Like many football fans across Big Sky Country, I am upset that (apparently) the University of Montana Grizzlies and Montana State University Bobcats playoff football games won’t be shown on television in Montana.

I mentioned this in my highly read “Just Football” column yesterday and linked to a story in the Missoulian newspaper.  Since then, the publicity about ESPN only showing the games on ESPN3, which is an internet-based channel, has grown tremendously.

There’s a Facebook page petition “Petition to have ESPN Have Feeds of FCS Playoff Games” that you can access HERE. Over 10,000 have signed up!

The three members (Two Democrats and one Republican) of the Montana Congressional delegation contacted ESPN – which is monumental in itself because they don’t agree on much of anything these days.   Continue reading

Just Football…

Welcome to another edition of “Just Football!”  This is the weekly column where I take a look at football from the NFL all the way down to High School!

With NFL week #11 under my belt I managed to pick 11 correctly (out of 14) but still out of winning the free pizza.  Watch out – I am like a turtle – slow and steady and coming on at the end!  Just a helpful reminder that there are three games on Thursday – so get your picks in early for Turkey Day.

Today I write about honors for some Lions, Philip Rivers and interceptions, my Chiefs, the BCS, the last Border War game, handling traffic tickets in Kansas, the Cats, the Griz, the Saints are marching, high school football, and a special place to crown champions in Missouri!

There’s a lot more…. Continue reading

Just Football…

It was a little tough for me in picking the NFL games last week.  I ended up with 10 correct (out of 16), so I’m hoping for better days ahead.  I may not win a pizza this year from Papa John’s…not that I need a pizza.

With fall starting, I am into football full time.  It all starts on Friday nights, where I enjoy listening to some of the high school games on the radio and keeping up with scores from high school games all across the nation via Twitter (@TheWesternWord).

On Saturday, my attention turned to major college ball and ended with me watching Mizzou at Oklahoma, the Bobcats at Eastern Washington, and the Griz getting whipped by Sac State.  Yep, I can keep up with all three and even feed myself…sometimes I drop a little food, but that’s the way it goes during football season.

Today’s commentary about football deals with the winless teams in the NFL, the ESPN NFL Countdown crew, major college football and division II ball.  I also have to comment on some Montana High School football.  Enjoy… Continue reading

Caught My Eye…

Congratulations on making it to another Friday! It’s just not any Friday, today is “Good Friday” and it’s also “Earth Day” and there’s also a Spring snowstorm pounding Montana!

A couple of Happy birthday shout-outs today to Jack “You can’t handle the truth” Nicholson (74) and Peter “Do You Feel Like We Do” Frampton (61)!

If this is your first time visiting The Western Word (TWW), Caught My Eye is a weekly column posted on Friday mornings where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to comment about during the week – and sometimes I add a little sarcasm!

This week I take a look at what came into my political inbox, snot, awards that are piling up for Bozeman, chickens, trophies, and much more! So sit back and enjoy another edition of Caught My Eye… Continue reading

“…and the home of the…

…Chiefs…Chiefs…CHIEFS.”

As an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan, this season has exceeded my expectations. If we go no further than the first round of the playoffs, then it has been a great season.

Ok, those last two lines were just a little bit too nice.

Try this: Take that Chargers, Broncos and Raiders – your seasons end on Sunday and we get to play at least one more game – we get some of the limelight! We are in the big show and you aren’t.

Take that you dipsticks on ESPN and the NFL Network who talk down about the Chiefs – the Kansas City Chiefs are AFC West Champions! The AFC West Champions shirts and hats are printed and they say “Kansas City Chiefs” on them. Eat that for breakfast…

OK, now I feel better. Continue reading

Happy 41st Brett Favre

Minnesota Vikings QB, Brett Favre, turned 41 on Sunday. In NFL years, that’s older than dirt.

The Vikings are in New York tonight to take on the Jets. The Jets…didn’t Favre play a year with the Jets? Oh yes, in 2008.

The Jets also employed a young lady named Jenn Sterger when Favre was there. That’s when the story gets interesting. Supposedly Ms. Sterger “may” have received some text and voicemail messages from Favre and, oh yeah, some photos.

There are also some other people coming forward…kind of reminds me of the Tiger Woods situation. The snowball effect.

You can read it all at Deadspin.com. Continue reading
