Monday Morning Politics

Happy Washington’s Birthday 2012!  If you are one of the fortunate ones to have the day off, congratulations!

Almost every Monday (even on holidays) I gather a lot of the political stories from the past weekend and put them all in one place for all to see – and I often add a little commentary!

Today I take a look at the best recent Presidents, charging $93 billion, out of state money, letting it flow, Decision 2012 coverage, Stolen Valor, rural voting, and to Russia with Max!  There’s a lot more…

Monday Morning Politics

This past Sunday (Feb. 12) was the first Sunday since September 4 that a football game was not played.  I know I know it depressed me, too.  Watching basketball and the Grammys did not help much, either.

Politics is kind of a sport, so watching the back and forth between the candidates and political groups can be fun!  That’s why I started “Monday Morning Politics.”  This is where you can find many political stories from the past weekend – and I add some commentary!

Today I write about Rehberg’s counter offer, millionaires, Chamber ads, Gallik speaking, a Montana accent, severe conservatism, good reporting, and much more!

Caught My Eye…

Here we go – we made it to Friday (FINALLY).  This is your chance to get away from it all for a few minutes and enjoy this week’s edition of “Caught My Eye.”

Caught My Eye is posted almost every Friday morning right here!  This is the column where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to comment about during the week (and often with just a touch of sarcasm).

Today I talk about Obama and REO, Three Cups, Schweitzer-care, contraceptives, eating wings, a poll, I share some of the e-mails from my political inbox, I write about No Child Left Behind, I give you a laugh with a Will Ferrell video, I mention the Governor Candidates forum, and the Winter kick-off.

One more thing – some important people were born today…and I tell you who they are!

Jets are just sexier…

Like many folks, I was very happy to hear about the Montana Air National Guard possibly obtaining a new aircraft mission (C-130).

I say “possibly” because this change in missions is planned for well into the future (almost two years) so anything can happen that could alter those plans.  The world is ever-changing and so are defense and security needs.  There could be a change in administrations.  The state where the eight planes are scheduled to come from could have a congressional delegation that puts up a fight to keep their planes.  Finally, our country is in deep financial trouble and there need to be cuts.

I also enjoyed poking a little fun at some of the story like Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer and his Adjutant General, Brig. Gen. John Walsh issuing a press release (the day before) that told us they “believe they will receive notification of the new flying mission…” Continue reading

Caught My Eye…

A long long time ago
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile…

Today is “the day the music died” – and The Western Word honors that day, so read on!

Welcome to the 80th edition of “Caught My Eye!”  Caught My Eye is posted almost every Friday morning right here!  This is the column where I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to comment about during the week (and often with just a touch of sarcasm).

Today I talk about planes in Great Falls, the Political Practices soap opera, a birthday, unemployment, Komen/Planned Parenthood, I share the e-mails from my political inbox and I close it out with American Pie.  Enjoy the read and enjoy your Friday…

Monday Morning Politics

Welcome to Monday Morning Politics – the place to catch up on the political stories from the weekend!

Almost every Monday I compile some of the political stories from the past weekend and put them in one place for all to see – and also offer some personal commentary!

Today I take a look at a super rich politician, I share the results of a poll, I check out who is on the ballot in Montana, I look at what Palin wrote, I write about Essmann getting out, I mention the “sweet 16″ who applied for a job in Helena, I talk about signs signs everywhere a sign, I let everyone know that the flim-flam man is heading east, and I wish a very happy birthday to one of my old bosses!

So let it be written…

It was really not a surprise when I happened to catch a tweet from the Great Falls Tribune (@GFTribune) last night that said, “Commissioner of political practices resigns.”

After reading the story in Sunday’s Tribune about the current Commissioner, Dave Gallik, and the problems the office was having, I wrote in my column on Monday, “…here’s my advice to Gallik:  Resign.”

He did.  Gallik’s parting shot in today’s Tribune tells it all: “This is a political, Republican-based fight against me,” Gallik said. “Not necessarily against me, against anybody who wants to get the job done down there.” Continue reading

Monday Morning Politics

Oh…oh…it’s another Monday, but we’re getting closer to the big holiday: CHRISTMAS!!

Almost every Monday I take a look at the political news that hit the newspapers and internet over the weekend and put it in one neat little package for all to see – with some commentary!

Today I look at Post Offices, the bet, a new poll, airport name, the new judge, winter tourism, spending money, and much more – so read on…

Caught My Eye…

It’s Friday and that means it’s time for another edition of Caught My Eye!  Congratulations for making it through another week!

If you are visiting The Western Word, Caught My Eye should be your regular Friday “get-away-from-work-for-a-few-minutes” column. In this column I take a look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week and often add some (pointed) commentary or sprinkle the stories with some sarcasm – just to make you smile (or shake your head).

Today I write about GameDay, Tweets gone wild, incumbency, journalism, missiles and bottle rockets, plea deals, Blue blue cross, and I share a special e-mail from my political inbox!  So read on and make your Friday go by just a little more quickly!

Montana Governor 2012: Toss-up

Besides the U.S. Senate race in Montana next year being close, the Montana Governor’s race is shaping up to be the same way (only with less money).

For all of us watching and commenting about the political process, it will be fun!  Right now it looks like the contest will be between Republican Rick Hill and Democrat Steve Bullock.

For those folks who are unfamiliar with the two, Hill is a former Congressman and Bullock is the current Montana Attorney General.  The current Montana Governor, Brian Schweitzer, is term-limited.

Recently a new Public Policy Polling poll was released and, overall, Hill leads Bullock 39-38, but 23% are undecided. According to PPP, “The margin of error for the entire survey is +/-2.4%, and +/-4.1% for the Democratic primary portion.”

After taking a couple of days to digest the results of the latest PPP data, here are a few things that stood out to me:
