Campaign 2012: Flyers in My Mailbox 5 & Analysis

In the past few weeks I’ve written about how much campaign literature I’ve received in the mail and how it is probably helping the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).

I posted a slideshow of some of the literature and since these columns were widely read, and I’ve got round five ready to go, but first let me give you a look at what I received throughout Campaign 2012:

-Total pieces of campaign literature received – 135

-The statewide candidate about whom I received the most negative campaign literature was Democrat gubernatorial candidate Steve Bullock – 16

-The statewide candidate about whom I received the second most negative campaign literature was Republican U.S. Senate candidate Denny Rehberg – 14

-The statewide candidate about whom I received the most positive campaign literature was Democrat U.S. Senator Jon Tester – 8

Note – These were pieces of literature with just the candidate’s name and not listed with other candidates.

For your viewing pleasure, I’ve scanned a few of the flyers that got my attention. Note: Just because I use a flyer does not mean that I agree with the information.

Enjoy the show!

Campaign 2012: Flyers in My Mailbox 4

In the past three weeks I’ve written about how much campaign literature I’ve received in the mail and that it is probably helping the U.S. Postal Service (USPS).

I posted a slideshow of some of the literature and since these columns were widely read, I’ve got round four ready to go! The campaign literature just keeps rolling in!

For your viewing pleasure, I’ve scanned a few of the flyers that got my attention. Note: Just because I use a flyer does not mean that I agree with the information.

Here’s an update about the one local state legislative candidate (running for reelection) and his support groups that have been sending me tons of literature: Last week I wrote that he and his supporters had graced my mailbox and/or doorknob with 16 flyers (so far). We are now up to 20 flyers with a week to go until Election Day! Whoop, whoop!

Enjoy the show!

MT Senate 2012: J-e-t-s, Jets, Jets, JETS

Readers may remember that I’ve written about the battle between U.S. Senator Jon Tester and Congressman Denny Rehberg over who can best sustain the military missions in Montana’s only military town, Great Falls, for the next six years.

Several times I have called Great Falls and the county it’s in (Cascade) the battleground in the U.S. Senate race.

Denny Rehberg brought Senator (and former Presidential candidate) John McCain to town. Jon Tester brought Senator (and former Navy Secretary) Jim Webb to town. Both are Vietnam veterans.  There may be others who paid a visit – I don’t get out of my bunker much these days with all the drones flying around… Continue reading

Campaign 2012: Flyers in My Mailbox

In this campaign season we can at least thank the candidates, political parties, and special interest groups for using the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to send thousands of political flyers across the state and nation to try to sway voters. This is good – the USPS needs the work!

One local state legislative candidate and his support groups have graced my mailbox and/or doorknob with eight flyers so far!

I have to admit that some of the flyers from the candidates and political groups are pretty good, so I have scanned a few of them to share as a slideshow (below). This election season we are seeing more tri-fold flyers and the goal is to get you to open it and read the propaganda. I did not scan the inside of the flyers.

Enjoy the show….

Yes, even I think the campaign ads are getting pretty old…

Campaign 2012: Tuesday Feels Like Monday

Welcome to Tuesday!  I know it feels like Monday!  Since my column on Friday, there has been a lot happening in the political world – it was a busy weekend just keeping up with it!

Typically Labor Day is the time when the campaigns kick into high gear and voters start noticing.  With about 63 days until Election Day, it is crunch time!  You’ll see more columns here at The Western Word – more than my typical one per day, five days a week!  I am going into overdrive – so you should subscribe to keep up!

This week I’ll be watching the Democratic National Convention and you can count on some lines devoted to it on this website and, of course, some tweets.

Today I write about Karl Rove and murder, Paul Ryan and marathons, Democratic Convention attendees, the AP and undecideds, debates in Montana, Campaign Ad watch, and much more…

U.S. Senate 2012 (MT): New Ads – “Lost” & “Fighting Swipe Fees”

At my house when a political ad comes on the television that is negative toward U.S. Senator Jon Tester or his opponent Congressman Denny Rehberg the first one in my family to shout, “Shut the front door” wins.  I don’t exactly know what the winner receives, but since I am winning this little contest I think the prize will probably be really nice.  Honestly, I mostly play the game by myself but my wife is starting to play along, although somewhat reluctantly.  The kids just think I’m weird – but just wait until they see the grand prize…

Today I take a look at a couple of political ads that are pretty good – good enough to catch my attention and make me want to share them with my readers.  The Rehberg campaign has a new ad called “Lost” and the Montana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association has a “Fighting Swipe Fees” ad running in the state which takes on Senator Jon Tester.

Enjoy my analysis of the ads and don’t forget to shout, “SHUT THE FRONT DOOR” when you hear a negative ad which will add a little humor to this thing called politics (it’s a long way to November)… Continue reading

Montana U.S. House 2012: Time to Push Granny?

Yesterday in Monday Morning Politics I talked a little bit about Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney’s running mate and U.S. Senate candidate and current Montana Congressman Denny Rehberg (who voted against the Ryan budget in the House).

That selection has also given Democrat House Candidate Kim Gillan an issue to use in the somewhat boring open U.S. House at-large race between Gillan and Republican Steve Daines here in Big Sky Country.
