Congratulations on making it to Friday! By the way, it’s perfectly fine to take a break from work to read Caught My Eye.
If this is your first time visiting The Western Word, the “Caught My Eye” column is where I take a quick look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week – and I often throw in some sarcasm just to make you smile. So get ready to head into your weekend armed with knowledge and a smile.
Today I write about Dark Money, apprentice hunter certificate, One America News Network, MSNBC, Olbermann, The Girls on Fox News, CPAC 2013, Feinstein v. Cruz, Menendez Grand Jury, Symbolics.com, St. Patrick’s Day, and much more!
The Dark Money Bill:
“Money, it’s a gas
Grab that cash with both hands
And make a stash”
-Pink Floyd (Money)
The so-called “Dark Money” bill from Republican State Senator Jim Peterson and Democratic Governor Steve Bullock did not receive a warm reception this week in the state legislature according to the Associated Press.
I will be surprised if the bill passes the Republican-controlled legislature this session because the “dark money” seems to benefit Republicans. In a couple years when the Democrats catch up, the Republicans will be more inclined to try and control it.
Montana Senate Bill 197:
While I’m all for youth going through a hunter safety course, it’s the “older” people like those who have served in the military (who carried a weapon) who should be excluded from the hunter safety course (and they should be exempt from jumping through the hoops with a local sheriff to carry a concealed weapon). As long as veterans can prove they were qualified to carry a weapon in the military, they should be excluded.
Promote the General Welfare:
According to the Associated Press, Montana Senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester “are proposing to block a Singapore technology company’s funding until the FBI has seen all the evidence in the death of one of its U.S. employees.” That employee is Shane Todd. His parents reside in Montana.
The most important job for an elected official is to help his/her constituents. The rules for that “job” are contained in the Preamble to the Constitution where it states, “promote the general welfare.” That is what Baucus and Tester are doing here. That’s a good thing…
One America News Network:
The Washington Times and Herring Broadcasting will be launching a new cable news network called, “One America News” in July.
Maybe they think Fox News is a “RINO” (Republican In Name Only) cable news network so they are starting one that leans further right…
Chris Hayes will be taking over the 8 p.m. slot on MSNBC which is currently held by Ed Schultz. Schultz will do a weekend show starting in April.
MSNBC probably believes that Hayes, 34, will be able to get the younger viewers to tune in. He’s up against Bill O’Reilly on the Fox News Channel (FNC). Overall FNC is a tough competitor because they have The Girls on Fox News:
Speaking of MSNBC, former host Keith Olbermann settled his $50 million lawsuit against his last employer, Current TV.
While I don’t always agree with Olbermann, I do miss him on MSNBC. It would be a big hit if he could work for CNN or Fox News…
The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) is holding their annual conference this week.
That’s all I have to say about that…
Feinstein v. Cruz:
While I don’t particularly care for the political views of U.S. Senator Diane Feinstein (D-Calf.) and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), I give this week’s showdown on the Senate Judiciary Committee to Feinstein. Judge for yourself – You can watch it HERE and read the story HERE.
The Washington Post is reporting, “A federal grand jury in Miami is investigating Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), examining his role in advocating for the business interests of a wealthy donor and friend, according to three people aware of the probe.”
I think Menendez might be circling the drain as a U.S. Senator…
What is Symbolics.com you may be asking? It was the first domain name ever registered (in 1985) and it turns 28 years old today! No, it did not belong to Al Gore.
Now you have something to talk about over dinner tonight…
Happy St. Patrick’s Day:
Be safe this St. Patrick’s Day and here’s an Irish blessing for you:
May the road rise to meet you,
may the wind be ever at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and the rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of his hand.
And here’s Danny Boy…
One More Thing:
Don’t forget to stretch…
