Caught My Eye…

Congratulations on making it to Friday! There are just 18 days until Christmas! Are you ready?

If this is your first time visiting The Western Word, the “Caught My Eye” column is posted every Friday morning right here! This is where I take a quick look at some of the stories I did not have time to write about during the week – and I often throw in some sarcasm just to make you smile. So get ready to head into your weekend armed with knowledge and a smile.

Today I write about Pearl Harbor, Hiring, Lobby Funding, Unemployment, DeMint quits, Colbert for Senate, McConnell Filibusters Himself, Karl Rove, Boots, Clotheslines, and much more so read on!

Always Remember:

Today in 1941, Japanese warplanes attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Around 2,300 Americans were killed.

If you’ve never visited Pearl Harbor, you should.

Hires:

Montana Governor-elect Steve Bullock has named more people to his administration. You can read that story HERE. Montana Attorney General-elect Tim Fox is looking for people.

So, that begs the question: What is U.S. Representative-elect Steve Daines up to?

Lobby Funding in Montana:

Lee Newspapers posted a story this morning where they asked the question, “So, why is the pharmaceutical-drug lobby handing out $500,000 to a political group called Montana Growth, whose office is nowhere near Montana?”

The reporter then spends about the next 800 words trying to answer it. I won’t ruin the ending for you, so read the story HERE.

Unemployment:

There was some good news this morning! The U.S. economy added 146,000 jobs in November, and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7% from 7.9% the month earlier.

Jim DeMint Quits:

South Carolina’s ultra-conservative Tea Party Senator, Jim DeMint, is quitting that job to become president of the Heritage Foundation.

Could DeMint waving the white flag be a signal that the Tea Party movement is coming to an end?

Colbert for Senate:

According to this story, Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert might be looking to take over the senate seat of Jim DeMint in South Carolina.

I don’t think Colbert could be any funnier than Mitch McConnell and Harry Reid…

Filibusters:

The headline kind of tells it all, “Debt ceiling debate twist: Sen. Mitch McConnell filibusters himself” which is probably a lot less than some Democrats would like to see him do to himself…

Hopefully the new Senate will tighten the rules for filibusters in January. I’d like to see senators actually have to be on the senate floor to filibuster.

Karl Rove:

New York Magazine posted a story this week with the headline, “Fox News Puts Karl Rove on the Bench.”

I guess Fox News has finally accepted the fact that Ohio went to Obama…

Update -Boots & the Homeless Man:

Most people saw the photo of the police officer giving a pair of boots to a homeless man in New York City.

Apparently the man has decided not to wear the boots in public because he fears he will get mugged.

Front Yard Clotheslines:

A city in New York “has banned the hanging of laundry on front lawns, making it a violation punishable by up to $1,000 and 15 days in jail.”

I wonder what they think about urban chickens…

One More Thing:

Don’t forget to stretch…
