Observations from the week 11/29/09

When the year winds down and we get into late November, it’s time to think of the holidays and family.  Oh yes, and there’s football.

This last week some of the things that caught my eye were the party crashers at the White House, a miraculous comeback by the Montana Griz, and the Carroll College Saints annual trek into the NAIA playoffs.  I also give my annual commentary about the college bowl system.   (more…)

The Circus is in Town!

Did you hear?  The circus has come to the city of Great Falls and Cascade County here in Montana!  It’s performing monthly at the Great Falls International Airport when their board has its monthly meetings!

Sorry children, it’s a grown-up circus, so you can’t attend, although you might be able to offer some sound advice to the Board that you were taught in first grade.    (more…)

Another Day in Court

It was a long time coming, but Barry Beach will get another day in court.  You might remember reading about his case in one of my previous blog posts.  Read it again HERE.

In 1979 someone killed 17 year-old Kim Nees near Poplar, Montana.  Barry Beach was convicted of that deliberate homicide on April 13, 1984.  In May of 1984, he was sentenced to 100 years in the Montana State Prison without the possibility of parole.

Back in April 2008, I wrote, “There are more questions than answers in this case.  I believe he should get a new trial.” (more…)

Observations from the week 11/20/09

This week some of the items that caught my attention were the “phantom districts,” the Sarah Palin book tour and media blitz, the Terrorists trial in New York, polls, healthcare, and veterans.  Of course, there’s a little sports thrown in, too.

Phantom Districts:
Sometimes you just have to laugh at some things that come from the Government.  According to the government-funded ($18 million) website (Recovery.gov) that tracks stimulus spending, Montana has 13 different congressional districts.  In reality, we only have one and that district is called At-Large (remember that for trivia). Observations from the week 11-13-09

It was a week for honoring our Veterans and of people doing silly things.  Here are some things that caught my attention.  Of course, my comments are included!  (more…)

Veterans Day 2009

Dear Fellow Veterans:  Thank you for your service.  Sincerely, Jack
vetsday09

Here we are again, another Veterans Day!  I like to watch the ceremony on C-SPAN every Veterans Day no matter who the speaker is, because it is the ceremony not the speaker.

In the past I have written about what it means to be a Veteran, but this year I thought I would look at Veterans Day from a different angle. (more…)

MT Senate 2012: The Meeting

I was not really that surprised to read in Politico last night that Congressman Denny Rehberg may be looking at running for the U.S. Senate in 2012.  The seat is currently occupied by Jon Tester.

Of course, there wasn’t confirmation from the Rehberg camp regarding the meeting with National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC).  Maybe he was just having coffee?

It was kind of interesting that the story was not picked up by any Montana media until this morning.  The Flathead Beacon posted a story around 9:45 this morning.

Of course, the lefties were out in force because Rehberg is a threat to their man.  They should be concerned.   (more…)

The Sound of Freedom

Yesterday the local news station, KRTV, did a story about the F-15s flying from the Montana Air National Guard in Great Falls.  According to this story, some people apparently don’t like the noise coming from the F-15s.

The story was picked up by the Associated Press and other news organizations around the world.   (more…)

Election 2009: The Day After

It is always interesting the day after an Election Day.  I call it the “Spin” day.  Every news channel you turned on today had someone claiming their political party did better yesterday than the other party.

Locally, I went two for three in the Mayor and Commissioners race.

E-mails filled my inbox from both Democrats and Republicans telling me their side won.  Even the head of the Montana Republican Party chimed in with an e-mail gloating about the wins in far away Virginia and New Jersey.   (more…)

Underdog

Sometimes it is good to see a person get revenge.  To see the little guy or team win or the person who was wronged get back at those who mistreated him is enjoyable to watch, especially in sports.

Most people like the Underdog.  They cheer for him or her.  In reviewing some of my comments over the years, it seems I like to write about Underdogs, too.  (more…)
